What you can safely check first
Before looking closely, turn the system off at the thermostat. If you are checking the outdoor unit, shut it off at the breaker too.
- Look for leaves, sticks, or other debris around the cabinet.
- Check whether the sound happens only at startup, only while the fan is running, or all the time.
- Replace a dirty filter if airflow has dropped.
- Make sure supply vents and return grilles are not blocked by furniture or boxes.
If the rattle stops after you clear debris, that is a good sign. If it continues, the issue may be inside the unit and should be inspected by a technician.
When rattling becomes a repair issue
Call for service if the noise gets louder, the unit shakes, the cooling seems weaker, or you hear metal-on-metal, grinding, or buzzing along with the rattle. Those are signs the problem is more than loose trim.
